Curie June 2018

Geez, we are really behind in our blogging. At the time of writing it is already July 21, 2018, so we will have to work to recount the happenings of June. At the beginning of June, Curie had yet to finish first grade, and with our challenges in her reading, there was some concern, however in the last two months, she went from an 8 or 10 reading level to a 12 and 14, coming just short of the 16 she was supposed to achieve. We enrolled her into a reading program for the summer so as not to lose anything and hopefully jumpstart second grade. It seems to be working as she is starting to read signs and various words and subtitles.

At the end of the school year, the school had Donuts for Daddy, much like Muffins for Mommy, and Albert went to Curie’s school to participate. While there, they did some games and ate some huge yeast donuts together. Albert dressed up for the occasion. That evening was also Elia’s parents’ day event so the clothes worked for both days.

June 15th was the last day of first grade, and Curie graduating was a momentous occasion. She will always be the youngest in her class but she is also one of the most spunky, ever eager to participate and engage with others. She loves school and we hope she continues to do so. The end of school also meant the end of EMA for the year and the start of camp, so we met up with the folks at EMA for their grand opening of their new location and talked about how Curie has grown in EMA. While camp will be fun, it will be great to have her go back to EMA at the start of the school year.

Curie’s first two weeks of camp were space camp and pony camp, she was sick for the first couple of days of space camp so did not have the full experience, though she did shoot her rocket (and subsequently lose it). Pony camp though was an amazing experience for her with her getting to ride Oreo, the oldest and second smallest of the ponies. Curie learned to take care of the horses, clean out stalls, lead, and ride, it was an amazing experience for her.

For Father’s Day we went to Tempo with Bryan and Natalie, and dressed all coordinated in our tsum tsum attire. In addition we all matched for the Incredibles 2 movie and relished in our matching attire in the mall and seeing the EMA folks. Curie is more likely to let us dress her in matching clothes with Elia not quite seeing why we would want to yet. We have a few more years before we get full rebellion, but for now it is a lot of fun (and kids, when you are older reading this and either saying “awww” at the pictures or deriding them, remember, these were amazing times for your parents, full of joy and happiness at having you).

At the end of the month Albert went to his conference and was away for a while. Erin’s parents came to help out and they had a great time together.  Also in this time we closed on the house and have begun the renovation in anticipation of the move. We are ever as busy and tired, but at the same time, it is the kids who give us motivation to do more.

So Curie is becoming even more considerate and helpful, though she does enjoy a poke at her sister regularly to lord over whatever she has or does (like a normal older sister). Curie has, as of late been whining again, and ready to burst into tears if she does not get what she wants. Elia has started to mimic this, so we are working on redirecting and changing the behavior.  Curie also started slipping into baby talk (copying one of her friends) and we have had to simply tell her we don’t understand when she does it. All in all though, these are minor things for a girl ready to be seven, who loves superheroes, and fantasy, and She-Ra, and Voltron, and Captain Underpants and though not limited to being a girl, relishes in the power of being one.
