Woke up in the Shadows

May 16, 2001

Woke up in the shadows,
a garden in the mists.
Knights in battered armor,
on palfreys to the lists.
Ruins of broken castles,
where eagles never soar.
Hinges creak (agony),
as she opens the door.

Where have all the men gone,
the fire in their eyes,
Just empty husks remain
that burn whither and die.
They all dreamt of conquest,
the fields remained untilled.
Children cry, mothers mourn,
the fire has been killed.

She pulls ’round herself,
the tatters of her dress.
The once silky softness,
feels harsh in her caress.
The girl cries and trembles,
no one there to hear,
Only God (destiny),
who turned away his ear.

Oh, where has all the hope gone,
she’s tired of the lies,
She’s just an empty husk
to age whither and die.
Once dreams of happiness,
of hearth and home to build,
the infant cries, she just mourns,
hands clench, the sounds are stilled.

Woke up in the darkness
steel towers, neon lights.
Business men in their suits,
en route to corporate fights.
Stories of broken castles,
are only found in lore.
Hinges still creek (agony),
as she opens the door.
