Watching the News

July 26, 2020, More political therapy

Sitting around in my work underpants,
I found myself doomscrolling and caught in a trance.
I found myself watching the latest press secretary,
I looked for substance but couldn’t find any.

To be fair these days, there’s not a lot to inspire,
When day after day they send vacuous liars,
To deflect and pivot and spin away actions,
With thinly veiled lies to appeal to their factions.

You have to feel sorry for someone in that position,
Who has to make sense with intense precision,
How covering up gaffes and ignorant flubs,
How denying what happened is part of the job.

And somehow were expected to think this is normal,
That covering shit up is somehow honorable.
When damage control becomes your reality,
Sounding like an idiot for someone else is your job security.

And I listened and watched and had to bear witness,
To this latest mouthpiece of presidential fitness.
It’s what we’ve come to expect, there’s not a lot to see,
We’re stuck looking up someone else’s colonoscopy.

Sunflowers 2019

Yes, we paid a lot, but the kids had a great time getting lost in the sunflowers. And yes, they sang the song.

Years ago we went to Burnside Farms to pick tulips under the advice from Emma, they do charge per person and then again for each flower you pick. So we went to pick sunflowers at sunset this year and we paid $10 per person plus $1.50 per flower. We realized (and admittedly we should have realized it sooner) that the fee was really for the right to go take photos rather than admission to pick flowers. Pro-tip Brookside Gardens is free. Elia Turns 5

Elia had quite the day for her birthday. She was of an age to truly enjoy it. Happy Birthday Sweetie! From the top left to right, 1) she got a Blackfire girl, sister to Starfire (which Curie got, since you need to get a present even if your sister is having the birthday), 2) telling her class that our family tradition is her birthday and going to NICU to thank them each year 3) her teachers 4) eating her cupcake 5) twirling in her birthday dress 6) choosing an expensive restaurant because she is the birthday girl 7) the restaurant turned off all the lights to sing for her 8) joy 9) wearing the dress from one set of grand parents and getting the horse from the other 10) sweetness for one of three cakes 11) blowing out the candles 12) turning 5

Curie Gets Her Green Belt

Curie passed her green belt test today. Look at her extension, keeps getting better. the top left was her trial class and each subsequent picture is her testing. See the picture in the comments for more pictures.

Look at the sparring, Curie chased that girl all around the mat. She took a hard shot from a higher belt later and didn’t flinch.

Balancing rocks

I’ve always wanted to try this, balancing rocks at the beach is very calming, I can see how it works for people. It was pretty windy today, and some of the creations fell over but here are a few. In the end I knocked them all over so that no kids would get hurt. To give you an idea the one on the right is about 5 feet tall and the one in the middle is about four feet tall.
