Grieving in the Nights

December 15, 2025

Closeted, avoiding the break of dawn,
Unable to bear even one more thing,
The world around me seems to fall apart;
The world within me is on fragile ground.

Dreaming would seem to be a nice escape,
But I feel undeserving of slumber;
So I stay awake, and sleep escapes me,
Succumbing when I finally collapse.

Deadened sleep is not always so peaceful,
Worries and stress often sneak their way in.
But once in a while, a tranche of relief,
Unburdens me with memories of love.

And the unmitigated emotion,
Soothes the soul for even just a moment,
Giving me strength to open the curtains.
The bright day stuns me into submission.

(One line summary: “And God smote me for giving credence to despair.”)
