First Halloweens
So Elia’s first Halloween she was almost one and she was one of the chef’s (Curie was the other) for our catering costume at the Hoagland’s Albert’s work also meant that he had to miss trick-or-treating – not family-friendly, but a necessity at the time; so it was also her trick-or-treating costume. Most people know Curie’s first costume (she was one month old) as one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and underneath she had on the skeleton costume. But what people don’t know is that Albert wanted to dress Curie up as a maggot. His rationale was that everyone would have little lady bugs, and cute animals for their babies, but Curie would be the only maggot. Here is photographic evidence that Albert did indeed dress Curie up as a maggot before Halloween.
Halloween 2017
In addition to the Hoagland party, the kids have their trick-or-treat costumes. The kids both wanted to be Wonder Woman for Halloween. These are separate identical except for size sets for them. Continue reading “Halloween 2017”
Hoagland Halloween Party 2017
For the first five years we were been Matrix black, vampire hunters, the princess and the paparazzi, greasers to the Hoagland’s preppie, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then in after a trip to Europe where we returned on the day of the party we have been largely meta, we were the safety inspectors, security, the caterers, the entertainment, doctors in the insane asylum, and this year costume contest judges. We gave away 25 trophies including best skeleton, best superhero, and best costume, 24 medals, “Nice Costume!” participation stickers, and an Amazon Kindle Fire grand prize. Happy Father’s Day
My parents are not on Facebook, so we don’t often post about them but on Father’s Day I wanted to say that I wouldn’t be the father I am today without both the tough and gentle role model my father is to me, and the love from both of my parents. I wear a silver on silver watch, write with a fountain pen, and prefer to drive stick. My father had a silver on silver Bulova from my mother, wrote with a Shaeffer PFM, and taught me to drive stick. The bottom picture is one of my favorites, my father has always worked so hard for us and we haven’t always appreciated, but one day, my parents decided to go fishing in Woodbridge Lake (man made and really no fish in Irvine) to really take a break with us an relax. Even then I had fond memories of fishing with my parents in New Orleans as children, and as a high schooler often at odds with my parents at that time, I distinctly remember being nostalgic even then, hence the picture. Happy Father’s Day Papa!

Disney on Ice
We have totally caved on the princess-thing apparently and went to Disney on Ice. Use the coupon if you can we got great seats for $25. The kids dressed as Elsa and loved it. We saw mostly Elsas, with some Annas, a few Belles, Rapunzels, a couple of Ariels, Cinderella or two, and a Snow White, one Moana, and a few other characters. Mostly little girls but a few boys.
Tinkerbell (Elia’s favorite) showed up as the interlude though theoretically Mickey and Minnie were hosting
Just look at the kids faces, they waved and called out to all the characters, and Elia clapped after each song. Curie asked to share our smuggled food with a little girl who was with her mom, it made us proud.
Dream Big went through a number of “princess-y” classics though no Brave or Moana.
The technical aspects were pretty cool with Erin’s favorite being the dragon. They had fog and snow and bubbles and fire, and fireworks, and sparks and a lot of other special effects.
There were snippets of most of the shows, but they did the whole Frozen story. They know their audience. 🙂
Elsa and fog. All-in-all, worth it and a good day, we even saw our old neighbors there.
