Elia February 2018

Being behind on blogging means that the entries we write late are generally on single topics or recounting the goings on for the month and less about the quirky little things we began these entries for in the first place. At this point in writing we are behind by two posts and are trying to recount what happened between January 16 and February 15 for Elia. We have also not been as good about keeping notes throughout the month so that writing is easier. The reason we have not been as good about these things is that we have been more overwhelmed by work and responsibilities lately. At the end of January Albert went to Atlanta for a Board meeting during Erin’s birthday, and because it was February we had Valentine’s day as well. Continue reading “Elia February 2018”

Curie January 2018

There is a constant anxiety in raising kids, whether it is reading, or the dentist, or screen time or bullying or any of it. In recent days, it has felt like there is always something, and unlike embracing milestones as when the kids were smaller, it is like waiting for the other shoe to drop. The best thing to do is to treat them like the milestones they are, but with the stress wearing from work, and life, there is a wearing down, of feeling run down so that it is not as easy to cope with the new issues. Other parents must feel the same way, there are memes and stories on Facebook and anecdotes from other parents that parallel our experience, but like adolescence, it feels like it is unique to you and makes you feel very lonely. All of this is more than balanced out by the joy of your child’s hug or desire to be with you, but it would be remiss if we did not document the challenges as well. Elia January 2018

As we mentioned in Curie’s blog post, Disney World and many of the other things we did during the month have been well documented, though in Elia’s case, Disney World was her first time at the park and at an age where she is old enough to more appreciate the experience. And while we had her birthday party before the trip, her birthday was on the flight back so we celebrated when we returned. The trip was for Elia and Albert’s birthday, but it was still nice to have a cake together. Curie, like Elia on Curie’s birthday, got her own cake as well.  Continue reading “Elia January 2018”

Curie December 2017

The problem about getting behind in writing is not remembering everything that happened in the month and resisting writing what happened after that month. We also did many things that have already been documented in December,. Disney World in particular was a great experience for the girls and though Curie couldn’t ride Star Tours again (it was in a different theme park than the ones we went to) she did get to meet princesses and ride other rides. The pearl she got was particularly special, as was the bubble wands that Alice and Derek graciously bought for the girls.  Continue reading “Curie December 2017”

Elia December 2017

It is our job in this blog to relate the month from November 16 to December 15 right as we leave for our trip to Disney World for Elia and Albert’s birthday and the holidays with Erin’s family. In this time too is Thanksgiving at our house with Albert’s family. In Albert’s family Elia is the youngest granddaughter with the next oldest being Curie, and the next oldest cousin being Dylan a full 6 or 7 years older than Elia. This means that as Curie gets to a point where she can play with the cousins, Elia will always be younger without a cousin with a comparable age for her. On Erin’s side in her immediate family, even if her sister has a child immediately after getting married (if they decide to have children), it would mean a 5 year age gap between Elia and the next child. Fortunately, Continue reading “Elia December 2017”

Curie November 2017

So this is written almost at the end of December. The end of the year is always full of holidays, family, and friends, it can be a time of stress as well as happiness, gratitude, and joy. Curie in November sang “American Tears” in the Veterans Day performance with the school, which was very touching and amazing at the same time. She would practice at home and would sing about the “reveneers.” Later we found out she meant “pioneers.” Elia liked the song too and today will sing with Curie if they sing the song. At the performance, we went this year which made Curie very happy (we didn’t last year) reminding us of the need to come to these things. Albert recorded the video and Erin took pictures. Elia November 2017

Halloween for Elia began with wanting to be a chef Belle for her costume long before Halloween, she has either long term memories or great memories of pictures of us in catering clothing with her as a chef, that she associates Halloween with being a chef. However, when she saw Curie’s Wonder Woman costume, and Erin’s fascination for Wonder Woman after the movie, she also wanted to be Wonder Woman; and because the costume we got Curie was too small, we had two Wonder Women. Elia wore her costume for the school parade and had a great time playing with her sword and shield, and posing in her costume at home. On Halloween though, she wanted to be Belle, and so she was Belle for Halloween. Continue reading “Elia November 2017”

Curie October 2017

Before coming to the DMV area, Halloween was never a very big holiday for us, however since the Hoaglands have a party each year to celebrate Bella’s and Quin’s birthdays, we have gone to their Halloween haunted house party since 2007. Curie’s first year was as a Red Hot Chili Pepper, but the following year we started our meta-costumes (well documented) which resulted in us being judges for the costume contest this year.  We were worried that the kids would decide last minute that they didn’t want to wear their costumes, but they embraced being judges wholly with Curie leading the charge. Continue reading “Curie October 2017”

Elia October 2017

The longest stretch that Elia wanted to wear her Belle dress was something like 45 days with a few gaps in the middle when it was not practical like birthday party at a jump place or trampoline place (BTW the only other outfit that she would choose to wear was her Batman one – teachers say for Elia every day is dress up day); we talked about whether we had to do something about it but decided that it was a phase and she would decide at some point to change her mind. Much like Curie with Natalie and Chloe driving her flamingo dress to be Elsa, Continue reading “Elia October 2017”
