Managing Loneliness

May 8, 2025

My friend, you don’t have to be alone to feel lonely,
Loneliness is not whether people are around you.
Loneliness is feeling unheard or misunderstood,
Loneliness is often about feeling unfulfilled.

And know, you don’t have to be unloved to be lonely,
You may have the love of your friends and your family.
Your lover or spouse, or partner may love you deeply,
But if you don’t love yourself, you can still feel lonely.

Understand that you can have joy and still be lonely,
Those around you may not be able to understand.
If the balance of your time is more sad than happy,
Even in the face of joy, well, you may be lonely.

You can feel appreciated and still be lonely,
Loneliness is not always something from the outside.
If you don’t know yourself, or worse, can’t be your true self,
Sadly, quite frankly, that is the loneliest of all.

It is said, “The greatest cause of death is loneliness.”
“Social isolation adds risk to mortality.”
Loneliness doesn’t go away, you learn to manage it.
Hopefully, you can find yourself less lonely each day.

So perhaps call a long-lost friend, maybe mend some fences;
Some people may be too busy; some will have moved on.
Don’t wait until it is too late, make time to connect.
Find purpose, resist the easy lure of loneliness.

Rediscover yourself or just discover yourself,
Take responsibility for you becoming you.
Love yourself enough for others to love you,
Whether you are lonely or not, that is up to you.
