An Alexandrine, on Grade School Crushes

March 31, 2025
Poem for today after watching my kids play with their friends:
(An alexandrine is a French heroic form of 12 syllables:  six syllables, a caesura (pause), followed by six syllables. This alternate sonnet form has a set rhyme scheme, AABBCCDD EE FFF GG, but each line is an alexandrine)

So there was chemistry, I know you felt it too.
Too young or too naive, unable to be true.
Just getting to know you, so invigorating,
Mundane conversation, so exhilarating!
Moments are so precious, wishing they would last.
Each moment was savored, but it felt also fast!
That tension you feel, before admitting you care?
Oh, you might like me too? Punching fists in the air!

We never went further, in hindsight, just too young,
No blurting “I love you,” no sad slip of the tongue.

I would go to your house, to see if you could play,
No fears if you were there, I always felt okay,
I loved being with you, the best part of my day,

When you are that young, there are no further plans.
There’s nothing next to do; just content holding hands.
