I was indoctrinated into “happily ever after:
Where “true love” triumphs over evil…
…And overcomes disaster.
Where in the “ever-after” there can be no wrong,
And when all can be made right by a Disney-like song.
And it all serves to set up unrealistic expectations;
Real life is as often bad as good…
…Without easy reparations.
Where life is not as simple as “good and evil,”
More often than not, it is decided by opinion and by legal.
The transient nature of our life is quite immutable.
Blindly navigating each day while…
…its meaning is ever so inscrutable.
We should embrace Life in all of its explicit reality,
A waste of life would be the constant pursuit of fantasy.
Even worse is the “what might have been;”
So perfect in its construct…
…that real life could never win.
Taking that path, we miss out on what is before us
Lost to the echos of that Disneyland chorus.
So to be happy in life, we must work to be grateful
Appreciate what little we may have…
…while we are able.
Because searching for “ever-after” is just a trap, you see,
Because in the end, only you can make yourself happy.
