[Notes: I took the remains of the “tears get lost in the rain” poem/song and cobbled this one together – which was an even more awkward teenage angst song.]
[Verse]
I was just a guy you kind of had a crush on, (don’t you see?)
You couldn’t have known the kind of impression that you would leave.
And sure enough, having that kind of attention is pretty magical,
It’s intoxicating, there’s nothing about it that is remotely practical…
So it’s reasonable that I put you on a pedestal (don’t you see?)
I thought you could see the person I would someday come to be.
Well, you had a crush on someone who simply did not exist,
I was awkward – but I didn’t dissuade you, that much I will admit…
[Chorus]
When you’re on a pedestal, you’re so far away,
I couldn’t see the wrinkles or the aging of the day,
I thought we would be forever when we were together,
But the only forever I can remember is the one in my memory.
[Verse]
And then you said, “I’m really glad I got to know you this summer.”
And then you leaned forward when you gave me your number…
I didn’t know I was supposed to kiss you, I was such a fool,
And somehow we got together even though I was uncool…
[Bridge]
And then when it was over and summer had passed away,
And you said, “Thank you it was nice.” And then went on your way,
I blurted, “But I love you,” and you raised an eyebrow as if to say:
[Spoken] “I think you were mistaken. Yes, I ate your bacon,
But you didn’t really think this would last?” (OUCH!)
[Chorus]
You didn’t know I was so uncool, and I was a fool,
You didn’t know I was a tool, you were from a different school,
I thought that someday we’d be forever when we were together,
But the only forever to remember is only ever in my memory.
[Refrain to fade]
And then you said, “I’m really glad I got to know you this summer.”
And then you leaned forward when you gave me your number…
And then when it was over and summer had passed away,
And you said, “Thank you it was nice.” And then went on your way…
And I thought we would be forever when we were together,
But the only forever I can remember is the one in my memory…
